Summer, Summer, Summer!
Here in Chicagoland, we live for summer. It truly is an almost magical time of year that makes the other 9 months worth it. And particularly this winter, which has been interminable, you can almost feel the buzz as we inch ever closer to these fun-filled months.
When you live in a city like Chicago, there is almost no need to travel far, to find something for the whole family to enjoy. With a world class festival and food scene, miles upon miles of lakefront, great parks and a museum campus that’s hard to beat, I’ve compiled my top 5 favorite summertime activities here in the Windy City. And our new favorite bubba® product for keeping our family hydrated and cool in the hot, Chicago summer heat.
These are all family-friendly, but equally enjoyable with friends or as date ideas! But whether you enjoy getting out in the city solo or with others, it’s always important to be prepared. I always make sure to plan a trip to Walmart in order to stock up on necessities to tote along like tote along sunscreen, a packable umbrella and a water bottle. My favorite water bottles year-round are bubba, particularly the bubba Trailblazers. bubba Trailblazer Stainless Steel Water Bottles keep your drink colder for longer periods of time (42 hours long!!) and the vibrant assortment of colors is perfect for summer. I also love that the cap is attached so I don’t lose it when we’re out adventuring!
My Top 5 Chicago Summer Activities
1. Biking the Lakefront
There are few better ways to fall instantly in love with Chicago than by touring its lakefront path. You could do it on foot or by Rollerblade, but the best way to take in the sights is by bicycle. If you’re looking to get out and move and see the city of Chicago in all of it’s glory, this top 5 Chicago summer activity will take your breath away!
The entire lakefront path is just over 18 miles long. I like to start in the middle, at Navy Pier, and head south.
2. Visiting the Museums
The Chicago Museum Campus is a 57-acre museum park that sits near Lake Michigan and surrounds three of the city’s most notable museums: the Adler Planetarium; the Shedd Aquarium; and the Field Museum of Natural History.
The entire area is landscaped with greenery and flora making the campus a wonderful place for a summer picnic. Follow the isthmus to nearby Northerly Island, where a nature area features beautiful strolling paths and an unbeatable view of the Chicago skyline.
Amazing exhibits, live music, food, sightseeing and more make the Museum Campus the place to be!
3. Enjoying a Chicago-Style Hotdog and Taking in the Neighborhood Festivals
This might be my favorite of my top 5 Chicago summer activities. More than 400 neighborhood festivals take place in Chicago each year, showcasing the city’s ethnic customs, music and food. Festivals in Chicago cover every genre, from food and wine to music and film. Of course, my favorite are the food festivals and I love to try some new and different every year. It’s also such a great way to expose kids to other cultures and cuisines.
And you know I can’t get through the summer without a Chicago style hot dog: mustard, onion and relish. A quintessential Chicago treat.
4. Catching a Show at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion
An outdoor venue, this show-stopping structure is home to the Grant Park Music Festival and other free concerts and events. It’s well-known for it’s acoustics and is also a great place to spread a blanket on the lawn and enjoy a show. With tons of great restaurants nearly, and lots of free shows, the Pritzker Pavilion is a favorite date night destination of mine.
5. Spending the Day at 31st Street Beach
North Avenue and Oak Street Beaches are known as the place to be, but if you’re looking for a quieter, more family friendly experience, head to 31st Street Beach. This is another favorite on this list of my top 5 Chicago summer activities. Clean, beautiful water and views of the city with a food and drink pavilion and an enormous play ground for the kiddos. The marina is a great place to walk around as well.
And we head to 31st Street Beach every year to take in the Chicago Air and Water Show. Although this beach is fairly far south from the event you can still see most of the action and don’t have to fight the crowds! When at the beach, you can always find us with our bubba water bottles in the cooler; they hold plenty of water to get us through the day without refills.
Stay Hydrated All Summer With Bubba
As you get out and enjoy my top 5 Chicago summer activities, be sure to stay hydrated all day! Minimize refills with bubba Trailblazer bottles which are easy to find at Walmart. My local Walmart had a big display right in the front of the store, and the bright colors are easy to spot!
If you live in, or have visited Chicago, what are your favorite summertime activities?
