Back to reality.
Yesterday I woke up in Florida, enjoyed coffee on the beach and played in the waves. Today I’m back in Chicago getting ready to go meet teachers and unpack school supplies. Talk about a slap in the face! As I begin to face the reality that is fall, at least I can do it this adorable utility dress!
My love of shirt dresses has been well documented here on the blog {here, here, here}. But this obsession is rooted in a practical place. Shirt dresses are versatile, flattering closet work horses. As my friend Ashley pointed out in her recent post about dressing for date night in the summer, a shirt dress is loose and comfortable without being shapeless. It provides a shape without making you feel encased, making it a favorite summer staple.
Transitioning to fall…
This utility shirt dress is particularly perfect for this time of year because it still works will with the summer heat, but the olive color gives it a fall feel. I’m also especially excited to pull out one of my favorite clutches! My foldover leopard Clare V. is a favorite in my wardrobe, however it always feels a bit too heavy for the spring and summer months. Consequently, it hasn’t made many appearances as of late. You can use color and texture as you start to introduce fall elements back into your outfits and still be comfortable in the heat.

Its in the details should have probably been the name of this blog because its this mantra that I pretty much live by when planning outfits. The hi-lo hemline, roll tab sleeves and pockets on this swingy shirt dress are what sold it for me. Its also super versatile and could go from the office to dinner with ease. The under $50 price tag didn’t hurt either! Additionally, it comes in black 🙂 Simple accessories like my favorite straw panama hat and strappy nude heels {both from Target and therefore super budget-friendly} are perfect complements.
